And doing so with the right quips (which Dunkey is a goddamn master at) can make it all really funny. It’s really easy to point out Elle running around kind of silly during the more intense stealth moments, and the plot conveniences of Elena showing up to save Nathan near the end of Uncharted 4, especially when you’re looking for those sort of problems. I didn’t see what everyone was so impressed by, and it took me coming back to it months later to get an appreciation for the game.Īdditionally, I think linear, or semi-linear, story based games are more readily usable as fodder for the type of “reviewertainment” that Dunkey does. On a personal level, my first impressions of LoZ: BotW weren’t too great. I think pretty much everyone can relate to that to some degree. Meaning that he feels during an initial play through that the games are far from perfect and gets frustrated by how much everyone seems to love something he sees as deeply flawed. The problem I see, and I think this does happen to Dunkey on occasion (see his reviews of Uncharted 4 and God of War), is that the hype surrounding these games gets to him. But TLOU certainly did have flaws, and while I think it’s practically perfect at doing what it’s trying to do and my favorite game of all time, I don’t think Dunkey was necessarily wrong in calling out some of those flaws that more mainstream reviewers were glossing over. Every credible reviewer on the planet was giving it a 10/10 and calling it flawless. I think you have to put his TLOU review in context for there to be much value to it. That was really wordy for no reason, but what I'm saying is, it's nice to be a bit more serious when you're discussing a piece of work to suggest to others that has been worked on by teams of people. Alongside that, being a comedian first and foremost, if you come at a topic like, "These are good games, here's why" in the same jokey manner he has, it can equally be impossible to take any of it seriously, because "It's Dunkey being Dunkey." This is dumb meta-media crap, but I think when you've consistently provided yourself to the internet as a form of comedy, one way or another, to come out and then give feedback and reviews of the very media that you parody with, it can definitely rub some people the wrong way.ĭouble that with how easily persuadable a lot of people can be from one of their favorite youtubers, and you'll have people who take what might be a joking set of sentences into legitimate criticism.
